Avoiding Hiring
Mistakes: How to Choose the Right Staff for Your Business

When hiring onshore or offshore we seem to forget that we are operating in a marketplace with many of the same traits as any other marketplace.  We are currently operating in a candidate friendly market, which means we have to be very careful to ensure that we attract the right staff and hire carefully. Making a good hiring choice when offshoring can be a challenging task, but there are several things you can do to increase your chances of success:

1.  Identify your specific needs: Before you begin the hiring process, it’s important to identify the specific skills and expertise you require for your new hires. This will help you to focus your search for candidates who have the right experience and qualifications.

2. Screen candidates carefully: When you are reviewing resumes and conducting interviews, it’s important to screen candidates carefully. Look for candidates who have relevant experience, good communication skills, and a strong work ethic. You may also want to consider conducting skills assessments or tests to evaluate their technical abilities.

3. Hire for Attitude: Unless the role is a highly technical one focus of the applicant’s attitude rather than skills. Skills can be taught, attitude can’t. Offering to train someone for a role they may not have the experience to otherwise get may assist you in demonstrating to a candidate that you are committed to their growth and set you above your competitors in the job market

4. Be cautious, but swift: Take your time, got to get pressured into hiring someone you normally wouldn’t simply out of fear of missing out.  There are other candidates and the costs associated with a bad hire are far greater than the opportunity cost of waiting a couple of weeks for the right candidate.  On the other hand, once you have found the right candidate act quickly and make them an offer.  The market for good candidates if tight an at the time that you spend considering they may well receive another offer.

5. Consider cultural fit: When you are hiring employees, it’s important to consider cultural fit. Look for candidates who are comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment and who share your company’s values and work ethic.

6. Don’t be cheap:  This is a person’s livelihood; we are talking about so bargaining them down $100 won’t make much difference to your business but will make a great difference to their income.  The pay rates I the Philippines are much lower than Australia already you can still achieve a cost saving and pay well.

7. Offer training and support: When you hire employees for offshoring, it’s important to offer training and support to help them get up to speed with your company’s processes and procedures. This can include on boarding programs, training courses, and ongoing support from managers and mentors.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of making a good hiring choice when offshoring and build a strong, reliable team of offshore employees.
